Don't be sorry. No need. As I said, if I was wrong, I was sure that I would be corrected. We all still have the capacity to learn. Thanks for furthering my education.

And thank you for the nice comment on the HOWTO.

Re: HOWTO: Get commercial DVD playback in Kaffeine

Before i go any further, does the same howto count for gutsy?
I mean everything should be the same cept those new repositories cuz it says feisty, so i'm not quite sure if i can use it.
But i see it worked right away in feisty. that's a quite of multimedia saver for newbies. i'm not newbie i just watch dvds on tv. but it could be fun got it working in linux. that would be like a period to kubuntu. i never tried it cuz it wasn't quite an easy task as i could read. so i never gave it shot. i'm old windows user and i look at linux the windows way, that means 3-clicks-max.
it's more fun for me that way. but i understand most linux/kubuntu users are used to hack things.
i think linux community needs those clear howtos that work right of the box in case of new windows comers.
i tried once just for fun put commercial dvd into the drive to see what happens. it didn't even mount, although i mounted it manually.
so, if i ever get it working in kubuntu it'd be amazing.

Yes, you would have to change the repository description for Gutsy, but I believe that other than that, all would be correct. The libraries and codecs should still be the same, just pulled from the repositories for Gutsy.

Re: HOWTO: Get commercial DVD playback in Kaffeine

I decided to gave it a try. So, summary for Gutsy.
i followed the howto and i took it with cautious. (half an hour)

          - I did step 1 and 2. libdvdread3 was installed.
          - In step 3 i followed the link for other distros, i.e. didn't do:
          deb http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free
          deb-src http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free
Instead i opened the konsole and did:
          1. sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O
          /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
          2. wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo
          apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

          - In Adept Manger i went to Adept -> Manage Repositories -> Third Party Software. I noticed that
http://packages.medibuntu.org/ gutsy free non-free repository was added and marked.
          - Did step 4. Fetched the updates and applied through that update icon in the right corner of the screen. What bugged me bit at this time is Version Upgrade button. I just checked it out and it wants to start the upgrade of the distro so i canceled it.
          - Followed the step 5. Installed all the packages except libxine1-kde cuz it doesn't exist for the gutsy apparently. (If you request install for libxine1-plugins all other packages are requested automatically)
Just to be 100% sure i restarted kubuntu.

          - Put the dvd on. It mounted, pop-up came up, i choose to play with kaffeine
and in no time there was a video with sound playing!

          ( i couldn't believe )

Re: HOWTO: Get commercial DVD playback in Kaffeine

              Tried

libxine1-plugins (this is an emply package that marks for installation the following packages)
              libxine1-console
              libxine1-ffmpeg
              libxine1-gnome
              libxine1-kde

well libxinel was installed but it doesn't show the rest of above that i needed to install.

Then i ran it and it say

No plugin found to handle this resource (dvd:///dev/scd0)

12:54:33 AM: xine: couldn't find demux for >dvd:///dev/scd0<
12:54:27 AM: xine: found input plugin : DVD Navigator

Re: HOWTO: Get commercial DVD playback in Kaffeine - Feisty or Gutsy

                Hello,

I have Kubuntu 7.10; following this HowTo, when executing

                4. Add the GPG Key:
                wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

                I get:

W: GPG error: http://sft.if.usp.br etch Release: Las firmas siguientes no se pudieron verificar porque su llave pública no está disponible: NO_PUBKEY 07DC563D1F41B907

In English would be: The following signatures could not be verified because your public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 07DC563D1F41B907

Any way, I followed the rest of the steps and I still can't play my DVDs

                On Kaffeine I get:

                Xine error:

13:57:47: xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:///dev/scd0]
13:57:47: xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [dvd:///dev/scd0]
13:57:47: xine: found input plugin : DVD Navigator
13:57:22: xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:///dev/scd0]
13:57:22: xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [dvd:///dev/scd0]
13:57:22: xine: found input plugin : DVD Navigator

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you,
                Guillermo

Re: HOWTO: Get commercial DVD playback in Kaffeine - FF, GG, and HH

@alquimista: As (I hope) you have probably noticed by now, the correct command is:
                  Code:
                  wget -q [url]http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg[/url] -O - | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
with a space between the O and the second '-'. In Linux, spelling and punctuation count!

Re: HOWTO: Get commercial DVD playback in Kaffeine - FF, GG, and HH

Not to argue, but the command:
                    Code:
                    wget -q [url]http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg[/url] -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
as included in my HOWTO does work as written. Just ran it and it completed without error.

From the GNU Wget 1.11.2 Manual:
Since Wget uses GNU getopt to process command-line arguments, every option has a long form along with the short one.
The space between the option accepting an argument and the argument may be omitted. Instead of `-o log' you can write `-olog'.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I stand corrected. Alquimista must have made some other typographical error. I still believe in typing commands as clearly as possible (and using single letter options, when available) in order to minimize typos. That may be because I date from the days when guys took Auto Mechanics in school, while the girls were taking typing.

I had got into the same problem as others when I upgraded form Gutsy to Hardy. We had no problem with DVDs in Gutsy.

After following these suggestions I could still not play any DVD. So I went into Kaffeine advanced settings and changed the DVD device from dvd to scd0 and presto I now have DVDs with sound.

Meaning that the issue is with how the DVD drive is addressed from within the OS, and not with the HOWTO steps (which do work).

What I find interesting, is that I don't suffer from this problem. Hmm. I installed Hardy (not an upgrade) and followed my own steps and was playing my DVDs with no problem.

i have tried this and Kaffeine still says install libdvdcss from a console: sudo /usr/share/doc/kaffeine/install-css.sh. It is asking me to install an old version which does not work either. Maybe someone can point out something or say another program which can play any DVDs. I'm running hardy 8.04

The way around this could be to use movie player as it will play DVDs after this upgrade. The problem is still there in Kaffeine
