    Major Crash Here

i am a newbie to this open idea..my desktop was working fine and i decided to add kde 3.5.
i had ubuntu and kubuntu before.
after install which took about 6 hrs i now am able to boot only to my root@desktop log in screen.
when i first installed kde came up with 3 logins..unfortunately cannot remember them all but 1 was quassar.dave and another.
i tried to log in but key board and mouse would not work.
so i shut down and rebooted only to be brought to a screen with 4 options
    root boot
    fix xserver and 2 others.
    none of which worked.
i have to switch between my 2 os systems to look for ideas...
when i am in windows i can see my other hd where all data is.
is there a way i can get info from there to post so someone can help me out..i have been going everywhere for about 4 days now...
i think the main problem lies some where with my xserver..
is it posssible to help me out

    Re: Major Crash Here

Can you try again, booting in rescue mode and using the option you mentioned to fix the X server? That will probably help. There is another one to fix broken packages. I would give them one more shot. And please report back

    Best luck!

how do i boot to recue mode?
also when i boot up i am presented with 3 selections of generics? cannot remember what they were sorry.
i have tried all 3 rescue boots but nothing will work..

all that happens now is i see the kubuntu loading and then goes to a gnome login screen.
pointer will flicker and thats as far as i can get..no mouse or keyboard..
i read a thread somewhere and tried the alt+sysrq+commands r,e,i,s,u,b
after that it does the same thing..
this is really driving me crazy as i have some work files in evolution mail
      hope u can help

        Re: Major Crash Here

Try to boot the Rescue mode (usually the second option down) and if it does boot, type in (at the prompt): sudo dpkg --configure -a

        Let us know what happens....

            ok here's what i get
            recovery with 4 options
            resume
            dpkg
            root
            xfix

            i ran dpkg - repair..
            bunch of errors
            dpkg:too many errors,stopping
            dpkg:../../src/packages.C:265rocess_queue_queue:assertion '!queue.length' failed
            aborted
then takes me back to root@dave-desktop:~#

            now what can i try

Can you still boot into Ubuntu, or is that a no-no?

Can you boot into the Gnome recovery mode and give the sudo dpkg --configure -a command from there?

                    Re: Major Crash Here

Arrg, the system is really screwed. Maybe your last upgrade got interrupted. I would try the pkg think a couple times (reboot a couple times), it may fix things in a couple tries.

If that doesn't work, when you are dropped to a root console, type this:

                    Code:
                    apt-get update
                    apt-get upgrade
This will hopefully get you going. At some point (when your packages are no longer broken), you may have to try the xfix after reboot. Good luck!

                      Re: Major Crash Here

how do i get to that one?
when i first boot up there are three generics there and each has their own recovery...
do i use the bottom one or the top one?

                        Re: Major Crash Here

i never tried the apt-get yet so may try that
i think i will go over to my other comp and log into this thread so i can use both at the same time in case i can get some more info..
i will try the apt get a couple times and see what happens there..
i think i did try something to that effect but i do not think the server would let me

                          Re: Major Crash Here

Do you know which partition your Gnome installation is on? Its recovery mode should be the one below that.

There is no need at all to apologise.

Can you write down what the Grub boot screen says and post it here, it will give us a guide..... hopefully....
