    Why Kubuntu???

I was wondering why everyone picked Kubuntu to run out of all the choices out there for distro's.

For me I did a ton of reading on the different ones out there. And kubuntu seem to be in the middle as far as ease of use. Not the hardest but not the braindead OS either. And it seems when I visited a web site that ranked the top 10 downloads Kubuntu was always in the top 3 of most download. So figure everyone must know something. And once I loaded the live CD all my hardware worked "out of the box" so that was a big plus as well.

    Thanks,
    James

    Re: Why Kubuntu

Obviously, everyone doesn't pick Kubunu, else, Kubuntu would be the only Linux OS is use.

I like Kubuntu because it has a familiar look and feel to the other OS I've used for so many years. I think that most who do choose Kubuntu do so for the same reason - familiarity. As to 'easy of use,' well, that is a subject opinion. What one user sees as 'easy' will be to another, 'difficult' and vise-versa. In general, IMHO, each chooses a distro of Linux that is similar to the OS they are coming from.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

      Re: Why Kubuntu

I actually started my Linux usage with Mandrake (well, Red Hat if you count the failed first attempt which really led nowhere), but when the person who was my "official" tech support stopped talking to me much, I started shopping for a new distro. Two things led me to Kubuntu:

      1. I am a KDE fangirl. I like KDE, it's pretty much all I've used while using Linux, and it makes me happy with the shininess of it and such.

      2. Two friends, who are about as different as night and day, both recommended I give *buntu a go. Both actually recommended ubuntu proper, since one is a Gnome fanboy, and the other uses fluxbox and they hadn't started packaging the version of *buntu with fluxbox at the time.

I am not sue about the evreybody. wish they did
I tried ubuntu (gnome) from the first version and liked it but hated gnome so when Kubuntu came along it was my choice after using knoppix, kanotix, mandriva, pclinux.

I am still testing mepis 7.0 (very stable, but not cutting edge) and mint (based on Kubuntu)

The main reason why I stick with kubuntu is simple. You are right in the middle of it.

Mostly because there is no 64-bit Knoppix, but I needed 64-bit live disk.

              Re: Why Kubuntu

I wanted a KDE distro and Ubuntu was the hype. I replaced Fedora with the first release of Kubuntu. I've tried OpenSuse and Mandriva, but they feel silly and less things work like I want. In Kubuntu I mostly just need to remove Dolphin and revert a patch in Konqueror.

                Yep, what Fintan said.

Besides a general love of playing with new PC technology, I actually do have some serious data that I need to access and work with frequently, so I'm torn between playing with the cutting edge (Sidux, Kubuntu Hardy Heron) and the need to have a VERY stable OS that I can count on every time, no matter what -- that would be Mepis/Etch. In fairness, that could also be Kubuntu Dapper Drake, I suppose.

So, I end up with multiple hard drives and multiple OSs installed, some for fun (that may or may not boot on any given day) and at least one that I can count on to take care of business.

On the Gnome vs. KDE thing, I ran Ubuntu Feisty for 6 full months last year, and actually used the low-latency kernel for recording a lot of old recorded music, via a turntable>amp>soundcard hookup and Audacity. It worked fine, but I didn't love it like I do KDE. So I ran Kubuntu Feisty as well, and when I was done with the recording project, Gnome went away and hasn't been seen at my house ever since. It's just a matter of personal taste -- they both work fine.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more reason that I almost forgot. Kubuntu users are actually superior beings.

Well said... The same here. I also liked how much easier the "self" customizations appeared to be. Again, this could go back to some form of familiarity.

Since Kubuntu I have played with other Distros, but none really compared to Kubuntu.

                    Re: Why Kubuntu

i'm a bit more of a ubuntu/gnome user just because it feels a bit more stable, but i've always liked kde apps a bit more than gnome's. i'm kind of in the best of both worlds, i use ubuntu on my laptop and kubuntu on my desktop. i guess the main reason i like kubuntu is cause i like how all the *buntus are put together and i lean just a little more to the kde side of things.

                      Re: Why Kubuntu

My first adventure into linux was Mandrake about 7 years ago. There were some crazy issues with X, such that the mouse would shift over about 1.5 inches to the right of the location that was actually being selected. I then jumped to Red Hat when I found out a coworker was Red Hat certified. I was a part time RH guy with windows most of the time (simply due to my sim racing hobby). Then one day at work someone mentioned Ubuntu and I installed it when i got home. I have tested some other distubutions since, but nothing compares to the ease of install and operation of *buntu.

As far as gnome or KDE. KDE has been my desktop of choice from the beginning. It started with transparency and Liquid. I have since grown to enjoy how well everything KDE plays together and no other music player compares to Amarok.

                          Re: Why Kubuntu

Greetings. I started Linux in Jan. 2006 with Knoppix, then Kanotix on an HD install. I then progressed to OpenSuse and Debian Etch.
I use Kubuntu because it is based on Debian and its great package manger apt, and because, as said elsewhere in this thread, the forum is so supportive and welcoming.

Not exactly. All users of open-source Linux (no, OPENsuse is no actually open source, as it does not use the GPL) can qualify as the exalted open-source beings.

                              Re: Why Kubuntu

Perhaps a not so obvious fact that tends to be overlooked often, is that not everyone has a fast internet connection. I downloaded Mandrake back in 2002 with a 56k modem and tried it for a couple of months on and off but overall it was a disappointment.

I think what Canonical is doing is completely amazing, less than a year ago I requested a free Kubuntu Feisty CD and absolutely loved it. I used to develop for Windows, now I'm 100% focused on Linux. I never looked back. Right now I'm working on a KDE4 port for Domino and that's just the beginning. Only recently I was able to upgrade my connection and the first thing I did was to download Hardy. Kubuntu has earned a loyal fan.
