freezes on boot unless i press the left arrow key

okay so i love Kubuntu after trying Gnome for a few years i have to say KDE is a revelation, still i digress.
I have installed 9.04 on my laptop and it stops on boot up unless i press the left arrow key. Sometimes, rarley,it doesnt need it and i can stop pressing it,the arrow key, once i get to the twirling dot thingies.
Anyone have any idea if this can be fixed or not?

i am sorry that i can't help you to much with your issue but that is the weirdest thing i have ever heard.left arrow of all keys very strange indeed

the only suggestion that i can make is boot to recovery mode and try the option to fix broken packages (there must be some issue w/ a package or maybe your keyboard layout)

There's got to be a lot more to this story .... how, exactly, did you learn that just the left arrow key, out of your entire keyboard, will enable a continuation of the boot process on that computer?

Re: freezes on boot unless i press the left arrow key

i discovered the left arrow key, as the boot up process normally stops on the screen that say Kubuntu with the progress bar at the bottom moves to the left so the first time it happened i pressed the left arrow key and hey presto it worked

It first happened when i used ubuntu installed via Wubi so i thought it was an issue with Wubi. Now i only have Kubuntu and no other os.

Its more of an annoyance than anything else. I just thought i would ask the question to see if there is a fix. If there isnt then no biggie.

Sometimes i need to press the left arrow key on shutdown as well but, since i had issues with Vista settings as to what to do when i shut the lid (i set it to turn off but it continued to tell me that programmes where running and did i want to close them), i always make sure its shutdown before i put it away.

Still im used to it now so no biggie if no fix as the start up and shut down times are so quick.

Next time, try pressing ANY key, or the spacebar. I think your boot process is hanging on the keyboard, for some reason. It may be apparent if you look at dmesg after it is booted.

Re: freezes on boot unless i press the left arrow key

I thing you better report this at "https://bugs.kde.org"

and post you dmesg with it!

Just open your bash console and type dmesg

This will give you the oportunity too see the messages from the kernel after your last boot....

Did you had that problem direct after installing Kubuntu? Was your Kubuntu installation an upgrade or a complete new fullgrade install with cd?

Re: freezes on boot unless i press the left arrow key

As i said above it used to happen when i had Ubuntu 8.10 installed under Wubi but i thought that was an issue to do with the Wubi installation.
Its a fresh install and i only have Kubuntu on the laptop now (no dual boot or wubi etc).
After the 2nd install it worked fine for a while but the day after it started to happen again.
i will run the dmesg thing tommorow and post the issue on the site you gav me.
I know this is a very bizarre issue btw.

                  Yep,

But I think it is the best you post it there, those guys know more about such a troubles then me!

Annyway I'm not sure about this, but it let me think on an installation I did do once on a laptop with microsoft windoze some years ago

Some laptops are using an EISA partition. When you reformatted/partitioning the hard-disk and there was not a EISA partition on it, well everything was fine, too until I did pull of mine computer and restarted it! Are you sure there was not an EISA partition on the original harddisk? The EISA on that laptop from me was 4Gig (standard). I did solved that problem with making a partition from 4Gig and the rest I did let! I did installed that OS on the rest from the harddisk and did not touch that EISA reserverd part. The troubles were directly gone!
Mine BIOS did make it hidden and mine installation came finally good!
I will not say that it is that, because some laptops don't have that EISA, but you can always check it first! I know it can give troubles, and it let me think on that!

This is strange -- it begins to sound like an intermittent electrical problem. Maybe the connector is worn out, or you spilled your beer on it?

Seriously, can you try another keyboard on that computer, or is it integrated on a laptop, or what?

Re: freezes on boot unless i press the left arrow key

I dont know about the keyboard cos i didnt have the same problem in Vista when i had that on here (up to last week) it only seems to be a problem with either Kubuntu and Ubuntu or Linux kernal.
anyway here is my dmesg report to see if anyone can figure out something from it:

if you also have it in vista it more then likely a hardware issue....

                            Hi Badger,

I think you better post that dmesg you took from the system at url: "https://bugs.kde.org"

Describe there your problem! I think also it is a hardware issue like sithlord48 thinks!
