update (big one) with also .15 kernel destroid my system :-(

This morning there was a big update (more then a 100 updates) with the .15 kernel in there, so i went for it and updated the lot, since HH is stable as a rock on my system i had no bad feelings.
I should have had :-( after the reboot i could not boot up even in recovery mode any more. No problem, clean wipe of / and a fresh .12 install with the complete update would do the trick. No it did not, after the boot it told me i had no rights what so ever on / and that was after a trainload of errors (it could not write or read in /home). been at it the whole day, and now i have a dual boot system back, but with .12 kernel en nightmares about updates.
Any other folks out there who have trouble with the last update?

Intel Duo Core system, 3 GB DDR2 mem, Nvidia GT 7600

Sorry to hear you had such a problem - I had run the previous update to the -14 kernel which required a recompile of the nvidia kernel module. Then when I ran the update to the -15 kernel I found that there was no new module for the nvidia driver.

I had to drop back to the nv video module for a few hours. Then there was a seconf update that included the -15 nvidia kernel module and everything was back in operation. There never were any booting problems other than that caused by the nvidia driver failing to load.

I have no idea why you would have experienced the problems you did.

      Code:
      dibl@cville:~$ uname -a
      Linux cville 2.6.24-15-generic #1 SMP Fri Apr 4 03:10:59 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Kernel -15 loaded up with no problems here. This system has been updated since kernel -8. Of course the Nvidia driver gets hosed with each new kernel, but that is a known and expected phenomenon. With Envy already installed, all that is necessary when I boot to the CLI is

      Code:
      sudo envy -t
and I'm soon back at the KDE4 desktop.

ya new kernel pooched my system too, thankfully I had the previous kernel to drop back to. An update later in the day fixed the problem.

In have the same issue. even after todays upgrades.
I was able to boot with the .14 kernel so no real harm done.

Booting with the .15 kernel in recovery mode gives me this message:
            parport0: Pc-style at 0x378 (0x778) irg7, dma3 [pcspp, trista,compat,epp,ecp,dma]
it sits there for about 3-5 minutes then turns up: "fail"
continues to boot, comes up with a recovery screen with:
resume boot, drop to root, fix xserver.

I chose "continue boot" from which I have to login from the cli and get to my gui.

            No sound, no network.

So back to kernel .14 for now.

Any ideas what all that quoted gobeldy gook means??

Done the update, but mailing from .12 kernel. First boot into .15 kernel, yep i got to the desktop very nice! Nut what is that, no network!? Configure the lot manual (automatic with dhcp not working??) nothing, looking at the running service, network TCP/IP not running, told to start at boot, reboot, and bar gets no further then 1 cm, then system stops booting, CTRL-ALT-DEL lets it jump ahead and then places things in read-only mode, but a whole host of errors fly over the screen so i cowered out, and pres CTRL-ALT-DEL again for some time to reboot.
kernel .12 works great sigh of relief, any suggestions?

I have no clue what the error you get is all about, just wondering why i don't get a error msg. Hmm is there a way to start in verbose mode? i want to know what the thing is that screws the system. It is the very same point in the boot bar (1 CM) that the previus update left me hanging.

Re: update (big one) with also .15 kernel destroid my system :-(

I have done that, it runs longer than a normal boot (err it continues longer) and then without any error msg it stops with :

                    44.751381 tda1004x: found firmware revision 26 -- ok

and that is the last peep it gives. A tree fingered salute will let it continue very fast to a menu with 3 options, only the one that lets you have a command prompt works (that is further then the previous update crash ) But since i have no clue what is wrong i dunno what to do, maybe wait till there are some new updates ;-)

well at the point where the recovery screen pops up chose resume normal boot and you get to the login: type your loginname
password and you get to the gui.

I have the .12 kernel stable and up, all is working smooth. I think i let the .15 kernel stew until .16 ;-P maybe then it will work like intended.
The recovery mode and then boot normal does not work for me, a whole storm of error msg's about not able to create this and that because the file system is read-only prevents X to even run. Sigh, look like i will skip .15, a shame i can not seem to find the .14 kernel updates anymore, since they did a great job.

                          thanks for the support :-)

I basicly have the same problem. The auto updater installed the 15-27 kernel i think that is the number now when i try to boot into that kernel from grub it goes about -------- that far and just stops and stays there until i reboot. the old one still works fine. I get some kind of error about authority is -1 and requested -0 plus a couple of others i did not catch. But other than that the beta works very good and is snapper then winxp pro sp2. Oh yea it removed my w64codecs now i have to figure out how to replace them.

Is this problem solved if you use "mount by UUID" in /etc/fstab? Maybe that is why I never had the problem.
