      I know aptitude may be a more powerful tool, but have you tried the normal apt-get dist-upgrade to see if perhaps aptitude has left something behind using safe-upgrade?

      Just grasping at straws here, I remember someone (probably here in these forums, can't find the link) who ran aptitude and it's solution to keep things good (in it's opinion) wanted to remove some of the new in order for some things to install. basically aptitude was working too hard

        I myself have only used apt-get (when I don't use the GUI Synaptic). When the update-notifier informs me that there are updates available, I go to the CLI and run sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. I've never had any problems with this technique.
        Windows no longer obstructs my view.
