Plasma 5 is the desktop in Vivid - this replaces the "KDE 4" you had, and will be the default in 15,04. There will be no separate instance of each.


As to breakages and borkages, this is to be expected, especially this early on, when Ubuntu and Kubuntu are constantly pushing changes to Vivid. It is very easy for one to be missing a whole boatload of things that simply have not finished being copied over. If you were able to update properly, you'd simply have to wait for things to finish and try again. And this doesn't take into account packaging bugs and new stuff. Be prepared, very prepared, for a rough ride

Looks like we are now out of the 2 week stalled state on progress for Vivid as the CD image now has the date 20 November! I am now waiting for lots of updates to appear in the repositories.

Since the new version has been available for download, I decided to try it out as I believe that some of repositories may have changed. I now only get a failure with the "extras" sources. My sources.list for vivid is:

deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu vivid main
deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu/ vivid-proposed multiverse universe main restricted
deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu vivid main

In the case of the sources list for utopic the "extras" is:

deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu utopic main
deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu utopic main
deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu/ utopic-proposed restricted universe multiverse main

The utopic updates do not give any errors whereas the vivid updates fail on the "extras" no matter what server I use, even the main one (this takes for ever!).
So is the "extras" not valid for vivid?

There is no "extras" repo for vivid (http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/), the extras repo generally opens around release time IIRC (if you need something from extras in vivid, try using the utopic extras repo).

Rog was talking about the KDE Applications release 14.12 (not kubuntu releases). KDE has recently separated the releases of Plasma, Frameworks and Applications:

KDE is the community (or so I get told, repeatedly).
Now the Plasma desktop, Foundations, and Applications seem to be updated with different version numbers and different cadences.

Grey Geek's version numbers are K(ubuntu)'s, which I really like.

What I would like to see fixed before the final release

While there is a lot of significant development involved with Vivid, there are some features, which I would like to see fixed, before I would consider replacing Utopic by this new version. Others may have found other problems, but the list of problems that I have currently found are as follows.

1. Keyboard has the keys for @ and “ in the wrong position. If I shift ', I get @ instead of “, for shift 2, I get “ instead of @. This happens for Input Devices, Generic 101 – key (Intl) PC and for Generic 102 – key (Intl) PC. On Utopic the correct characters are given. FIXED - Updates must have resolved it.
2. Attached devices such as a DVD only show “Open with File Manager. Utopic shows the multi-media options.
3. If I add an empty panel that I fill with applications, and select the option to have “Windows Can Cover”, I cannot uncover it when I move the mouse to the extreme edge where the panel is located. Utopic allows an empty panel, which is filled with applications to launch, to be shown when the cursor is moved to the edge where it is located.
4. No Screensaver option is provided. This is available in KDE 4.12 and provides many pleasurable visual experiences, particularly for my 2 year old grandson. I believe that there are many who do not use this feature, but there are some, including me, who do.
5. More and improved Widgets are needed. For example, the analogue clock does not provide the addition of multiple time zones. Also,the widgets on the desktop have their options bar always on the right side. This limits the right edge extremities for locating widgets and oddly enough, even the left edge side movement is limited.
6. Muon reports that plasma-widget-yawp is not installable.
7. KDE Partition Manager does not work. FIXED: Now solved in Plasma 5.2.1, also see claydoh's solution in post #31. It gives the error
8. NVIDIA Fails to Load. The command

In your case, I would not suggest moving to Vivid. It will be a release or more before everything is in better shape, feature-wise. Vivid is not expected to be 100 percent feature-complete, but with at least Plasma 5.2.2, and even a remote chance of 5.3 (likely too late to get that in before final) there will be a number of movements in the right direction.

1. I can't reproduce this one, likely an Ubuntu bug for Launchpad
