I had the same problem the other day. I updated via Terminal instead of Muon and lost Kmail, KAddressBook, and who knows what else. I thought I borked something so I zapped it and re-installed Glad to know it wasn't anything I did, but now I feel stupid for taking the time to start from scratch LOL

I am going to be a bit harsh here, but in this situation, we all have to take some of the burden of blame on our own shoulders
If apt-get in the terminal shows a list of packages to be REMOVED, and we still hit <ENTER>....
If Muon or synaptic shows us that something is going to be uninstalled, and we still click OK....

I saw an update available icon (Muon update notice) in my system tray and opened a Konsole and did the usual
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
The update command hung on "100% waiting on headers", which usually indicates a repository being hammered. I opened the Muon Updater from the system tray and it updated several files without problems. Returning to the Konsole I redid the update command and let it set. Almost 5 minutes later it completed without errors. I never ran the upgrade because I did that through Muon."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”

I moved steve7233's posts (and replies) here into the new thread he started, because they're unrelated to the OP's topic.
