how to install ?

hey i have some wuestion about installiong applications

i wantedto install antivirus so i went to avira.com and downloaded the linux version

but when it's opening with arc then what ?? what should i do next ?/

also upon trying to install vlc video lan

there was some codes where should i put them

Generally, see "How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" at http://cutlersoftware.com/ubuntuinstall/

Specifically, right click the tar.gz and choose extract here. Inside this will have the folder named "doc" which has install instructions. Open Konsole Terminal Program and navigate into the antivir-workstation-pers-2.1.9-18 folder. Then input the instruction

sudo ./install

To install Vlc input the instruction

sudo apt-get install vlc

The best package manager is Synaptic. If you don't have it input the instruction

sudo apt-get install synaptic

If you have a quick download speed one of the easist things to do is to install Automatix2 from http://www.getautomatix.com/. This is a script which will download and install a lot of useful stuff e.g. ClamAV (Antivirus) or Vlc
