Cant find package - cant play video files

I've just installed kubuntu 6.10 in my PC. I cant play video files whit kaffeine such as wmv or avi. I've been searching on the forum and it seems that i have to install the libxine-extracodecs package.

When I try searching the package in adept, it doesn't appear. I have enabled the 'extra' repositories in the sources.list file, so that's not the problem.

Can anyone tell me how to install that package? It would be useful for me if anyone posts here what are the packages needed for playing the most common media formats.

    Happy 2007!

How do you change enable the extra repositories from the manager console.

Re: Cant find package - cant play video files

I'm a bit new myself but it's so quite here tonight i'll have a stab at this one. The file you are looking for is in my package manager list so i can only assume somewhere you do not have the right repositories.
Have you changed all the lines which said only "universe" to read "universe multiverse", ie.

      deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe multiverse

You could also try adding the canonical repositories as below

      deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ dapper-commercial main

I actually prefer to use synaptic but i'm sure they work the same.
I suppose if you have a different version to dapper you will have a different name in there.

If you have a quick download speed the easiest thing is to install Automatix2. This is a script which will download and install lots of extra, useful things. You can see "How to install Automatix2 on Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu" at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_E...2C_and_Xubuntu

"How do you change enable the extra repositories from the manager console." Put the following command into Konsole. When Kate comes up delete the # at the beginning of any line which starts deb or deb-src
        sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list

You can ignore that error for now, it's harmless. For gui programs you should use the run command(press ALT+F2) and instead of sudo use kdesu.

Re: Cant find package - cant play video files

First thing is to say that I was trying a bad avi file, since I tried another one and kaffeine played it.

Second is that I'm using edgy, not dapper, and there may be some different packages in the repositories. Anyway, I still cant play wmv files. Arochester, I will try automatix2.

Anyway, here is my sources.list file; I dont know if there is some more repositories I should add.

Re: Cant find package - cant play video files

Hi I solved all the video problems by installing Automatix (which is a sort of Apt-get), then swiftfox and all the swiftwox plug ins. After in the swiftfox Tools menu i added Media player connectivity, which helps you to handle multimedia files, streaming, video, etc.

You can get automatix here, just follow the instructions.
