    Will not detect modem !!!!

I have just installed KUBUNTU 6.06 onto my Toshiba Satelite Pro L20 laptop, no other operating system is installed.

Everything is working ok except i can`t connect to the internet. I have tried setting up the connect manually going through all the choices of modems in the list but no joy at all.

here is what i have done :

    K Menu>
    Internet>
    KPPP (internet dial-up tool)>
    KPPP Configuration>
    Accounts NEW>
    Manual set up>
    Connecrtion name = xxxx
    Add (phone number) = xxxxxxxxxxxxx>ok >
    back to KPPP Configuration>
    MODEMS>
    New>
    Modem name = xxxx>
Modem device : i have picked every single /dev/xxxx option in the drop dwn list & after each one i have then rturned to >
    Modem>
    Query Modem ....................

i then receive this message very time ::

    Loking for modem

    Unable to open modem.

Please help as this is driving me round the bend !!!!

Linux is totally new to me so any help in easy straight forward way would be most wellcome.

    Hello
I am newbie in Linux, so i dont know if its useful for u or not
    1. If u have a wificard o something that u can use for online, try it.
    2. I think u should check if your modem card is compatible with Kubuntu Dapperdrake version.

Re: Will not detect modem !!!!

The modem is a winmodem and they don't go very well with Linux. (An external modem, which certainly won't be a winmodem would be better.)

Look at http://www.vogliaditerra.com/vogliadilinux/index_en.htm - OK its SUSE, but it does suggest an answer.

Try Googling "Linux Toshiba Satellite Pro L20"

You have to be careful with external modems, too...most of the USB interface models are in fact "Winmodems."
