It should be self explanatory - its the original installer - just gives you more choice - like where to put grub

But for step by step instructions on a range of scenarios go here

Re: GRUB doesn't boot my OS's after installing Kubuntu

I went ahead and tried out the text install.. and for some reason it doesn't detect my IDE drives. Only the SATA and the USB hard disks that I have plugged in into the pc are detected for some reason.

I want hda to be the whole linux hard drive, and my SATA hard disks are solely for windows use.

I know that hda and hdb both are working without any problems because I managed to mount and use both of them in Windows XP (mounted the ext2 partition using an IFS thing for windows)

EDIT: This may not be relevant in some ways, but relevant in others. I also went ahead and attempted to install knoppix into a 6GB USB Hard disk as a debian OS. Everything worked fine. When I did this, I disconnected all of my internal hard disks. I told it to install grub and not change the master boot record. Dont ask why. But then when I tried to boot it, it just stops on "Waiting for root file system".. which is the same message I get when I run my actual hard disk's kubuntu installation. Perhaps the fact that both of them are debian based has something to do with it?

OK - well this one has got me I'm afraid. My only suggestion to you now is that you post this as a new thread along the lines of "Installer doesn't recognise my IDE drives", Maybe somebody has come across this before- I haven't - sorry

Thanks anyway! I learnt a lot from this even though it did not solve my problem. ^__^
