I think claydoh was referring to 14.04 'initial'. apt (as apposed to apt-get) came into 14.04 during one of the 'point releases', yes?

No idea. I just didn't remember installing anything to make it work but that doesn't mean I didn't. I discovered Kubuntu through one of the point releases, 14.04.2, I think.
