How to import Nikon camera images

This with Utopic. I put a San Disk micro SD card in my USB card reader, then plugged in the USB cable (about 1 inch long) into a USB port on my desktop. About 1 second later, the device notifier in my system tray pops up an "Available Devices" thingy (box? pop-up?):

Unless I move the cursor over it, it pops down after 3 seconds. I can get it back by clicking on the device notifier.
Even if I don't use the device notifier pop-up, the card appears in dolphin's "Devices" panel.

I have an external usb SanDisk card reader that reads the SanDisc used in the Camera

if i plug MY USB reader in and insert MY camera's card, what happens? Nothing!

Please remove any card from the reader and disconnect the reader from your computer. Then perform each of the following steps below.

1. Open a console window and drag it to the left half of the screen. Let's call this console #1.

2. Open another console window and drag it to the right half of the screen. Let's call this console #2.

3. In console #1, type:

udevadm monitor

The terminal will display three information lines and then the cursor will wait at the next line. This is expected.

4. In console #2, type:

tail -n 0 -f /var/log/syslog

The terminal will display nothing and the cursor will wait at the next line. This is expected.

5. Plug in only the reader, with no card. Does anything appear in either console window? If so, copy/paste that information to a reply here.

6. Now insert the card. Again, does anything appear in either console window? If so, copy/paste that information to a reply here.

7. To clean up, in both console windows press Ctrl+C to stop the processes. Close the windows.

Yesterday I purchased a new usb 256MB USB 3 Card reader. I now am able to see my Nikon files!
