Kubuntu won't recognize my external hard drive

I would like to install Kubuntu on my compter, more specifically my new Western Digital External Hard Drive, but when I boot Kubuntu from the disk and run the installer it only recognizes my internal harddrive, which unfortunately is in 1 big partition and a secondary one can not be created. Is there any way for me to accomplish this? I am a noob at this so...
    Thanks

I don't know why as I am very new at this too but Kubuntu installed to my USB Western Digital Passport and to my amazement it booted right up.  It runs very slowly and has crashed a couple times already but it did install and boot up, something no other distro could do.  Anyone have any ideas as to why it worked.  I have no idea of what version it is or how to update any programs yet.  ubuntu 6.1 wouldn't install.  Mepis installed but wouldn't boot, Puppy wouldn't install on external hard drive but works great on USB Flash drive and is much faster since it runs totally in RAM.

Kubuntu used three partitions that Mepis had created, a / of 10 GB for boot, 1 gb for swap and 46 GB for media.  Do those seem about right?

Will Firefox browser work under Kubuntu?
