Kubuntu Desktop: is an anti-virus necessary :-\ :-\ ???
As Teppic stated, clamav or klamav or other antivirus software is really meant for or aimed at or even best used if you run a mail server or for all email. I personally have a script that runs daily via cron that runs clamav and rkhunter(root kit checker) and logs everything for me. I don't run a mail server, and never have. But it's just something that runs in the middle of the night and I get logs of it and can check every day that all is well. Just something I feel safe doing.
