    Microphone Problems

I am a Ubunut 8.04 user and now a Kubuntu 12.04 user, means im no stranger to 'ubuntu', in all cases since I've used any opperating system, I've searched the internet and found my answer to any problem and fixed it myself. But now I find myselft stuck.

I've spent 6 hours or more trying to get my computer through skype (I'm using for just experiement as is were), for my mic to work.

I have looked on previous problems on forums which has this problem as fixed and followed as far as I can for their fixes - But there sceen shots do no match the options I have available for my computer.

The only issues I can think of, of why I'm having such problem is that, I'm using my TV (via HDMI) as my monitor, and that I'm using my stereo system as my speakers, both of which I see no problem, but maybe the both combined.

Stereo system shouldnt be a problem, as it ports into same as speakers - but is having my TV as monitor causing me that much hassle?

I've accepted my TV not taking sound from my computer (as once again) options from online, were not availavle to me, and my stereo system worked from direct from my computer.

I'm new to asking for help, so from what I've put, tell me what I need to put into consol or anything for me to paste, take into measure I'm still trying to fix it myself and may have unstalled drivers and utilities, trying to find an answer.

I just want to talk and play.

    Thanks

what kind of mic (usb or pluged into the mic input or built in)
in system settings>multimedia>phonon on the device preference tab click on the diferent options under audio recording ,,,,,,do you see your mic or what may be controlling it ,,,if so move it to the top of the list .

for sound thrugh HDMI ,,, in the same phonon window click the "audio hardware setup" tab and under hardware click the drop down for profile and select one of the HDMI output options.
I will assume you have checked alsamixer in a terminal to see if the mic is muted or turned down !!!!
I have found installing and using "pavucontrol" (pulse audio volume control) can be easier to use .

I'm using a headset with seperate leads plugged to mic and and earphone sockets.

In system settings>multimedia>phonon on the device preference - Recording only has one option > "Built-in Audio Analogue Stereo"

It is the same option that my audio playback uses - but on audio playback it does have an option to use "Simultaneous output to Built-in Audio Analogue Stereo"

I have looked on another webpage that suggests that my sound card may not support the microphone, but I have used this headset with this computer, but at the time I had Ubuntu 10.04 (32 Bit). I don't remember having this much trouble to set it up though. This is Kubuntu 12.04 (64Bit) - if that makes any issue.

I have reinstalled pulse audio sound server which comes with pavucontrol and alsamixer acknowledges the existance of a microphone (well its not muted).

The HDMI that you suggest, I have gone through that avenue to fix it, but the option is just not available to me, I have seen a screen shot of the option, and gone back to mine and I don't have the option.

Thankyou for your reply and any further assistance.

If you need any more information, I'm happy to give for an answer to my problem .

I have made progress of sorts, I'm not sure why as I have changed many settings including in the BIOS and downloaded and installed drivers and mixers. However I have now plugged my headset into the front ports and my mic now works.

I had previous to that looked into problems with my onboard sound, finding on some forums of a problem including kubuntu and VIA VT1708S, but I could not find a solution.

This at least shows that my headset does work, but why not on the rear ports?

I also have a serious feedback issue, where the mic is picking up direct from my headphones - The whole point of me getting a headset was to avoid this problem . I have tried tweaking the options in alsa mixer, but reducing the sound to the point of no feedback means I can't hear anything any more, and reducing the sensitivity of the mic means it no longer picks up my voice.

I will not lose any sleep over using front ports instead of rear ones, but do you have any ideas for this feedback loop - of course if you have a solution for any of the above problems I would as usual be grateful.

        Thanks
