Need help getting modem recognized

(Please be patiant as I am new and learning) I am trying to get my smartlink modem to work. I get message "unable to opem modem" or "looking for modem. please me so Imay get online using Kubuntu & dump this windowsXP. I use dial-up and I just had this IBM 4G w/256RAM-w/ smarlink modem put together for linux. Audio/sound works excellant, Ijust want to get online!! Thanks to all who help.
