    installing updates disaster

Using a netbook version of Kubuntu 11.04, I decided to update my programs as it apparently hadn't been done automatically. There were 145 updates, so I let the computer download and install them while I did something else. I did catch one message about running out of disk space, so I pressed the option create more disk space, but nothing happened, so I figured the problem had been solved and let things continue. Well, when I tried the supposedly updated OS, the strangest thing happened: after opening with the familiar blue Kubuntu screen, I was immediately directed to a print version of Ubuntu 11.04!
What I think happened is this. I had tried awhile ago to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto my netbook, but was unsuccessful due to lack of space. I assumed that because the installation was aborted, nothing had been saved, and so forgot about it. Apparently it is still there, though not complete (hence the text commands). I suspect that what happened was that due to lack of space on the Kubuntu partition it 'invaded' the space of the Ubuntu partition and somehow ended up directing the boot loader to that partition instead of the original Kubuntu loader. At least that's my rather uneducated guess. My question is a simple one: how do I recover my Kubuntu 11.04 operating system? How do I get rid of the Ubuntu partition, which I don't need, without affecting Kubuntu?
