I get the built in shell and a prompt that says (initramfs). What do I do now? I am trying to install the linux on my passport external hard drive.

Welcome to the forums :-)

Are you trying to create a "bootable" HDD? This page has some instructions that might help. There are four different instructions so you will need to see which one works for you. I've used Unetbootin personally, it's a good tool for this kind of job. :-)

I have a toshiba satellite will not start up. I think it may have hard drive problems. I have taken the hard drive out and was trying to install kubuntu on my external hard drive. I worked fine for a while, but the screen I was talking about came up and I do not know what kind of command it want to finish the install.

How are you trying to install Kubuntu, CD or USB stick? What is your Toshiba exactly?
