    Can't think how but lost all sound; although output meters are bouncing around just as I would have expected?

    Second, did this happen out of nowhere or did this happen after you did something, like upgrade the OS, for example?

      All I can think of was having messed about with Prefs in Audacity

          Install pavucontrol package, run it (pulseaudio volume control in application menu), and look at output devices. You should have analog speakers and analog headphones ports. Try both of them. Maybe the wrong port is chosen.
