    Problem with display (DVI)

I am running a dual boot system with Kubuntu 11.04 and Windows XP Professional. I had been using the setup in VGA mode, but just purchased a DVI cable. Windows had no problem recognizing the Digital Display, but now when I try and boot Kubuntu, I am presented with a command prompt environment. I've searched for a resolution to the problem, but have not been able to obtain a solution. Any help appreciated

    Re: Problem with display (DVI)

I'm not sure what the problem is, but a couple of things you might check:

    less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
see if there are any errors near the end of the file.

If you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, there may be something in there that is specifically directing output to vga.

Edit: If you don't have an xorg.conf file, try running:

    sudo service kdm stop
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
    sudo service kdm start

    see what that gives you.

Also when you boot your system, select the system you want to boot, and instead of booting, hit the e key. Look for the line that starts with linux and see if there are any display options such as "vga=" set. If so, try deleting the "vga=" part and booting with CTRL-X
Edit: also look for a "gfxpayload=" line, and if it's there, delete it and boot. May not be pretty, but it might work, can fine tune it later.

What video hardware are you using? Does this have some kind of dual video (like Optimus)?

      Re: Problem with display (DVI)

Thanks for the reply. Apparently do not have an xorg.conf file.
      Ran
      Code:
      sudo service kdm stop
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
      sudo service kdm start
Looked like I was starting to get a desktop, then went back to command prompt.
      No "vga=" or "gfxpayload=" entry.
Video card is an Asus GeForce 7100 GS

Do you have the nvidia-current video driver installed?

          Re: Problem with display (DVI)

The resolution of the monitor hasn't changed has it? Seems like that xorg is still trying to use your VGA port rather than the DVI one.

Start with the Xorg.0.log file as drdru suggested.

In your previous setup: Since you're not using an xorg.conf file, did you enter anything into /etc/X11/Xsetup in the way of a xrandr command? Also could be in ~/.xsetup or something similar.

          Also, in text mode, type

          xrandr -q

          and report the results.

I downloaded a program that enabled me to view linux partition from within windows. Here are the files:

                Re: Problem with display (DVI)

Try adding the following to your xorg.conf:

                Code:
                Section "ServerFlags"
                  Option "ignoreABI" "true"
                EndSection
                Might work.
There seem to be some problems with nvidia drivers and the new xorg stuff that just came out, though on my system it all seems to be working OK.'

Do you have the nvidia-current package installed?

Of course that does not explain why vesa isn't working...

Edit: Further -- it appears that you have BOTH an NVIDIA and the Nouveau driver installed. That won't work, guaranteed.
Either remove nvidia-current if you have it installed, or we will have to do some work to get rid of nouveau.

                    Re: Problem with display (DVI)

                    Glad you have it working.

                    FYI:

NVIDIA and Nouveau drivers can't co-exist. If you want to install the NVIDIA drivers, you can go two ways.

Installing the driver from the repositories means installing the nvidia-current package. That should take care of knocking out the nouveau driver, but in case it does not, you need to be sure to run sudo update-initramfs -u after the installation, as I have seen instances where it does not run automatically, and you will get the results you got.

If you install the driver from the NVIDIA website, then you need to do two things:

                    1. Blacklist the nouveau driver. You must create a file in /etc/modprobe.d called blacklist-nouveau.conf with the following two lines in it:

                    blacklist nouveau
                    blacklist lbm-nouveau

You will need to create/edit this file as sudo.

                    2. Having done that, then you must run sudo update-initramfs -u and then reboot. This should clear the nouveau driver out of the system and allow the NVIDIA driver to load.

Either way, you may also need to set up and xorg.conf file. Installing the driver from the website offers to do this automatically, or you can do it manually with sudo nvidia-xconfig.
