Kubuntu update broke kubuntu, and now I cant leave GRUB.

So I've installed kubuntu on this little Thinkpad t20. it was fun. it spends the majority of its time offline. afte struggling on and off for years, i finally got the sound functional ! but then I let it update and now Kubuntu is gone :C. Now i start it up and it goes into a Minimal GRUB interface thingy. I''m barely adequate at BASH, and I've never even heard of GRUB before. I've tried a few other threads with similar problems, but most of them failed, and one or two of them brought me to even ANOTHER text command line that i didnt recognize. So can anybody give me a step by step list of commands I can use to recover my kubuntu gui? Please? I'd really rather not reinstall. I gots me some documents worth saving.

Do you happen to know which version of Kubuntu you originally installed?

My guess is something has gone wrong in the setup of the xserver.

when it comes up at the bash prompt type startx and see what error messages you receive.

    let us know.

Also please read the following thread and provide information it requests Thank you

wowee a replay at 3am! AND I AM REPLYIN TO IT TOO!! lol. I'm not sure exactly which version it is. the phrase "lucid lynx" comes to mind. And I can't get to BASH, It boots to: GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu6. Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. "startx" is an unknown command.

I cant give you all the information about the operating system until after i get it running again. I can guesstimate some of the other stuff though. Ironically, i have a spreadsheet with all that info... stored on the hard drive and currently inaccessible. DOH!

      ThinkPad T20
      Intel 3, 700MHz I believe.
      Graphics processor? Just the chipset.
RAM: two 128MB sticks. lame, yes. considering upgrading, kinda pricey. kubuntu ran fine before though.
HD: one 160gb 2.5in PATA drive, internal
im not sure what an optical drive is :0

wow i am the lamest computer science major ever.

hold shift while grub is loading. this should (hopefully) get you to a grub menu if so try the recover mode and when its up drop to a root terminal and try to use teh command 'os-prober' then the command 'update-grub' hopefully that will fix your booting.

if you can't boot that far, get a copyof the ultimate boot cd
        http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

there is a supergrub disk on the disk i just don't remember what menu entry , but when u find it use the option attempt to find oses. this (hopefully) will detect you install of kubuntu then you can boot it (normally). once it boots open a konsole and run 'sudo os-prober' then 'sudo update-grub' this will hopefully fix you menu

        good luck.

          ERROR
          0210: Stuck Key 2A

lol that failed. if you meant hold shift when i see "GRUB LOADING" then i only have a splitsecond to respond. Im going to try the ultimate boot cd now. shall update.

          UPDATE:
Okay. Ultimate Boot > HDD > Boot Management > SuperGrub2 v 1.3 i presume. I've tried to run it or "detect any boot. Seems to reboot my system a lot. I dont think thats what should be happening.

Okay, tried the first SuperGRUB option (v 0.97) and it found my OS but I cant boot it. it tries, and then i wind back up at the menu, or i get an ERROR 6 (note that at the top of the screen it says that Error 6 is ok).

Okay here's another update. I ordered some more RAM, should get here next wednesday. will it fix the problem? very likely not. BUT, it might get me enough horsepower to run the OS live from the CD. would there be a way to update my grub on the installed version whilst operating live?

os-prober and update-grub command should do it.

                error: unknown command 'os-prober'
                error: unknown command 'update-grub'

did i spell it wrong? would you like a list of the available commands?

allso let me ask a few questions

do you remember how your partitions were?

did you have a sepret /root partition and how large was it?
did you have a seprat /home partition and how large?

was the hole 160Gig drive used and how?

is thar eney chance your / or /home got full ............this will hapen if the / partition fills up.
if you have a swap partition a live cd should boot just fine on that box but maby a bit slow.

holy snotbuckets!!! i hit refresh and replies appeared IN BETWEEN my posts.

                          ls yeilds
                          (hd0) (hd0,1) (fd0)

the whole 160GB is one partition with Kubuntu. there are no other operating systems on it. there is NO CHANCE it is full, because all I've added is about 5 different documents, about 10 pictures, and 1 song.

I didn't do anything special with the installation, so I dont know if the seperate /root and /home partitions come default.
