    Broken KDM : SOLVED !

    Hi All,

It appears as though i broke my kdm after trying to update kde.
    I did the following

    1) added the repo
    ppa:kubuntu-ppa/beta

    after reading the entry
KDE SC 4.4 Release Candidate 2 packages available on http://www.kubuntu.org/

i then just opened kpackagekit and let it upgrade EVERYTHING.
i then rebooted and kdm was broken so i tried something else with my little Linux knowledge

    2) i logged in to the Console from kdm and did the following
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I thought maybe this might solve it.
    i then rebooted.

My problem is kdm doesnt work. After i attempt to login there is a screen flash and then kdm just loops back to wait for login again.

The user/password login is 100% correct.

For now im just using startx from the console to get into kde but i was hoping to fix kdm.

    Any ideas?

    Help a newb please ;-)

Have you tried loging in again from the "second" login screen?

I saw this with lucid a while back.

I am not going to upgrade my karmic until kde4.4 is fully released.

          About the KDE

The KDE will release on the schedule (more or less) and fix the bugs when there are fixes available /1/:

          Rex Dieter:

          1. KDE currently has a time-based schedule
          ....
2a. We have no documented or objective criteria to identify showstopper
bugs (or features, for that matter)
          and /2/:
          Aaron J. Seigo

...the idea is to release often with repeated cycles of improvement...

          /1/ > Upcoming KDE 4.4 vs. Bug #162485
/2/ > Possible 4.3.0 blocker in the Konsole KPart?

          There will be KDE 4.4.1, 4.4.2, ...,4.4.X.

            Hello all,

Thank you all for your replies.

I tried all the suggestions in the FAQ link including renaming KDE etc etc
I also have plenty of space free
I tried an older kernel as well which definitely has the nvidia stuff compiled against it.

Today i cant even use start x to get into "gui" mode.
            DOH

I can see a console briefly appearing when the "second" kdm login appears.
I have tried to login about 7 times in a row to see if anything changes and every time it "loops"

why didnt i have some damn backups.

            Any ideas?

            Thanks again for your help

              Hi all,

I fixed it. Stupid me did something as root and it busted the permissions.

I hope the link and solution below will help somebody.
