Installing Kubuntu on Win 98 machine

I am using a CD at this point to run Kubuntu. When I install it on my machine, will I still have access to the data folders on the drive?

I tried to get to the information on the drives by running from the CD and get the message
    could not mount device
    mount can't find /dev/ndb5 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

will I need to install kubuntu before I can get to the drives?

    1) Maybe not. Possibly you can get there from the live CD.

Click on System Menu (The second icon from the left at the bottom)
    Click on Storage Media

    What do you see?

If you see a picture of a hard drive (or pictures of hard drives) have they got a green triangle at the corner - this means they are already mounted.

    Click on the Hard Disk(s)

    2) Do you intend to "dual boot"? I think Linux can read and write to Fat32, whereas it can normalkly only read NTFS which comes with Windows XP.

On dual booting have a look at something like http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p2.htm

The Live CD starts with the hard drives unmounted, once you install Kubuntu it'll automatically mount all your hard drives at startup. Linux can read and write to FAT32, while only be able to read NTFS. Chances are your windows hard drive is NTFS, but XP can also be installed on FAT32 as well.
Here's how to manually mount the hard drives:
