Several issues with adept when trying to install JRE.. please help :(

Ok well to start, I am pretty much a linux noob.. but im starting to get a grasp on most things.

Anyhow, if someone could pleaseee help me out would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to install JRE, first issue was my feisty version didnt have adept, so I just installed it. Now whenever I try in install the java-bin, java-plugin, etc.. and I go to "request install" then apply changes, my adept crashes.

Also another question on top of this, when I go to make sure my multiverse repos are enabled or what have you.. when I go into adept and the third-party tab, what lines should I add?

Hope this is enough information.. any insight would save my life, thanks!

Are you still running Feisty? If so, that may explain the problem. If Feisty didn't include Adept, you probably installed a version of Adept that required libraries that are different from the ones, you installed with Feisty.

By the way, Inept (as some of us called it), is no longer the package manager of choice. I suggest that you install Synaptic, from the repositories of whichever version you are using. It is a much better graphical package manager than Adept ever was.

        Use the console. Run:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install synaptic
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

No, > Kubuntu wiki: Feisty was "Supported until 2008-10". After that the Feisty was removed from the repositories.

            (edit):

            2009-02-21
            Remove feisty.
            Before you edit, BACKUP !

You are now faced with two choices: a series of upgrades to whatever version you decide to use or a complete re-installation. Your options:
Gutsy -- probably not a very good choice because it's no longer officially supported, so you'll get the same error messages as with Feisty.
Hardy -- the last version using KDE3. Many people are still using this because they believe that KDE4 is still a work in progress. Kubuntu Hardy will be supported by Canonical until October, 2009, but Ubuntu Hardy is a Long Term Support release, so much of the software will continue to be supported until 2013. This is a possibility, but since the KDE stuff that you interact with will not be updated past November 1, you may miss some important security fixes in KDE3, although this is unlikely.
Intrepid -- The first version of Kubuntu with KDE4. Some people could use it. Some even liked it. (I was not one of them) It will be officially supported until April 2010.
Jaunty -- The current version. This version is quite usable, although it still has some rough edges. My guess is that most of the folks who frequent this site are currently using Jaunty. So this is the version that I would recommend (for whatever that's worth).
Karmic -- This is the version that will be released at the end of this month. Beta versions are available now, but if you go that route you must be prepared for some problems even now.

Therefore, I would suggest an immediate installation of Jaunty, with the intention of upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic around November first or second (after the rush subsides). Be sure to save all your personal "stuff" so that going from Feisty to Jaunty will be sort like an upgrade in that sense.

There are a number of good posts here about how to upgrade. The main thing is BACKUP, BACKUP, and Backup.
