By files I assume you are referring to programs since you say install. I find programs by typing "which program-name" in a terminal window. For example, if you have just installed the joe editor then if you type "which joe" you will get "/usr/bin/joe" because joe is in /usr/bin. Other programs go elsewhere. Type "which alsa" and you will see "/sbin/alsa". I hope this is what you wanted.

eaterjolly: im still getting use to linux (but my computer is mighty faster or is that because th reformat deleted 50GigsAlso, as things get cached, you'll find some things even get faster with time. The number of files doesn't have anything to do with the speed because linux does not use a faulty file system - that's why you don't need to run defrag to fix it.
