how to select which program opens a downloaded file in Firefox 3.0.13?

    Hi,
How do I select which program opens a downloaded file?
In Firefox 3.0.13 for KUbuntu a file download manager "Filhämtaren" in swedish opens during file download. When the file is downloaded it is in the list in "Filhämtaren" and when I right clic I can select Open or Open Folder. Both alternatives tries to open all files in K-Torrent which tells me the torrent file is corrupt!
Same problem for PDF's, JPG's etc.
How can I select what program should be used for a file type from this "Filhämtaren"? As far as I can see, there is no options at all in "Filhämtaren" and I can't find anything in Firefox settings either.

i'm new to this myself so i'm kinda shooting in the dark here. i'm using Firefox 3.5 but i think this applies anyway. my version is an english one (i don't like the swedish one) so i don't know the terms in swedish.

open the preferences under the "edit" menu. go to the tab "applications" and next to "file" it should say "ktorrent" (the wrong program to open with). click on it, a menu will drop and choose "always ask".

if you want to pair a file type with a program, then as far as i've managed to find out the programs (dolphin, ktorrent..) are located in usr/bin

    lycka till.

aha - Firefox for Linux can't distinguish between different types of files, like jpg/pdf/torr. Everyone are just "file".

      Thanks for your help!

If you make a "Downloads" folder in your /home/user folder, then in Firefox open "Edit > Preferences" and under "Downloads > Save files to:" you can set it to always use /home/user/Downloads.

Then, rather than try to open all kinds of files from Firefox, use Dolphin to open the files when they are in the /home/user/Downloads folder. Dolphin is much better for setting the "associations" for each type of file.
