    No.

Generally go for an Nvidia at the moment, over ATI.

When it's in, look in your Menu for something called "Restricted Device Manager". Does your video card show up in that? If it does, make sure your are connected to the Internet and "Activate". Caution: It is slow, takes its time and you have to allow it plenty of opportunity to work. It should download and install the correct driver "automagically". Then Reboot.

Thanks, a Geforce FX5500 be a reasonable choice?

Can you post a link to the card you want to buy (there are some variations over the same reference chipset). Do you really want AGP? I assume your mobo doesn't have a PCIe slot? What kind of performance do you need? HD Video? 3D? If so, in what monitor resolution?

NVIIDIA will need you to install a binary driver (as explained by arochester). Most likely it will work. Although binary drivers have issues and are hard to debug. ATI's binary drivers are a lot less reliable (they work very well _when_ they work, and some times it takes a lot of work to get them going). On the bright side, ATI is producing Open Source drivers. The older cards are already supported, and the newest (R600 and R700 chipsets) are on the way (perhaps late 2009, there is already some 3D going, but lots of work to do, see Phoronix if interested).

So, in short, you can buy a cheap NVIDIA or older ATI now and a solid newer ATI later on for the open source drivers.

          First off should have said
Running Kubuntu 2.6.24-24 generic - link? - just looking on Ebay - a few FX5500 available. AGP slot, no fancy stuff (3D, HD Vid). 1024*768 and up a couple of levels. Otherwise control res/colour refresh, balance/gamma - just the basics.
This card (2004) is listed as having legacy support by Nvidia.
Can't find any "Restricted Device Manager" on this system. I assume this would download the driver from Nvidia and apply it?

Arrg, legacy support in NVIDIA might not be really the best. Maybe you can find a more recent AGP card. Newegg (Power Search) is best for that, you can buy somewhere else).

Yes, the hardware driver will show after you install the hardware (the program scans for hardware and matches a "list" of available binary drivers)

At this resolution a modest card should get you going ,yes ....
