use backports
If you aren't open source orthodox you can install sun-j2re1.5 or sun-j2sdk1.5 packages from ubuntu backports.
Just add:
Code:deb http://ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net/ hoary-backports main universe multiverse restricted deb http://ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net/ hoary-extras main universe multiverse restricted
Code:sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install sun-j2re1.5

java and firefox?
another way, is to go www.java.com, download the j2re file. (not the rpm type...) and then,
1. chmod a+x ./j2rexxxxxx
2. ./j2rexxxxxxx
3. agree to the agreement, and press spacebar...and again...
4. after it's been install, go to the firefox directory, probably at /usr/lib/firefox/plugin or /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugin, and then 'ln -s'... erm... the detail instruction is at the java site... this is as far as i can recall about the steps.
regards,
a.w.

Re: java and firefox?
If you want the latest JRE from sun do this:
Go to : http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Click on the download link that says: Linux (self-extracting file) *Note:not the one above it that says rpm
Click on the instructions that go with it. Make sure you follow the .bin instructions not the rpm intructions!
Follow the instructions...hook up the plug in...then test if you installed it correctly by going to the same link as above and click the verify installation button.
Tadow... your done. If their instructions are unclear to you let me know and I'll break it down.

Re: java and firefox?
I am not very familiar with FireFox .
Anyways .
Uninstall the JRE you have aready installed on that. And install JRE 5.0. If you have already installed the same JRE 5.0 so . Try this time with different source.
Well i heard about that FireFox is not very well for java support.
Anyways good luck.
