cannot install plugin for abiword 2.4

I am on 8.04. I installed abiword via adept and am trying to install grammar checker via Tools-->plugins. I get:

error getting information for '/home/albert/.Abisuite/AbiWord-2.4/plugins No such file or directory

Apparently AbiWord 2.4 in kubuntu doesnt contain it or it is somewhere it shouldn't be.
Could someone help. Perhaps I should upgrade to new 2.6.6 version. How would I do that?
