trying to install canon pixma ip1800 printer

Sorry if this is a bit long...

I have a Canon pixma ip1800 printer that I used to use on Windows XP. I am trying to install it on my new PC that runs Kubuntu.

When I connected the printer, it seemed to recognize it automatically. If I go to System Settings / Printers, it is listed as "Canon iP1800 series".

If I try to print, however, I get this error and to be honest I have no idea what it means:
    cupsdoprint -P 'iP1800_series' -J 'xx' -H '/var/run/cups/cups.sock:631' -U 'george' -o ' copies=1 multiple-document-handling=separate-documents-collated-copies orientation-requested=3' '/tmp/kde-george/kdeprint_ZWfORabu' : execution failed with message:
    client-error-document-format-not-supported
I tried doing a search with Google and on the Ubuntu forum but I found nothing relevant except for a Canon site that provides a driver:
    http://support-au.canon.com.au/conte...900718601.html
I downloaded it and it's an rpm that I don't know what to do with.

I tried going to System Settings / Printers / Add Printer Wizard but when I got the printer model selection, the iP1800 was not there. I tried opening the rpm file using the "other..." button but it rejected it.

I came to this forum and read this FAQ:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099811.0
I followed the instructions to use the CUPS web page but the only printer driver it found was for iP1400 gutenprint or something. I tried installing it on that basis. Now when I print it doesn't give me the error message, but nothing comes out at all.

    Can anyone help?

Your link to Canon Australia doesn't seem to work. The relevant page seems to be http://support-au.canon.com.au/EN/se...&menu=Download

Sometimes, but not 100% of the time, you can convert an .rpm to a .deb using the app called alien. Try the command:
sudo alien (name of the program to be converted)
If you look at the page the .rpm is #6 or #9. There is also a Source file at #11, Linux Operation Guide at #11 and Linux FAQ at #15

      Hi Raichu,

I have on my blog how i succeed install my Pixma IP1880 at http://ahyeop.blogspot.com/2007/11/i...rinter-on.html

I used a guide to setup printer on PIXMA iP1800 at http://crovegnoux.blogspot.com/2007/...en-feisty.html. Sadly it is not in English. I think it is in Spanish. I might be wrong, as i don't understand the language as I am from Malaysia. But I can understand the steps.

      Hope this will help.

Unfortunately that seems to be for an older version of Kubuntu.

Fortunately, however, I asked a workmate and he managed to find this site:
        http://hex1a4.net/xubuntu/howto.php?htid=04

        That seems to have worked.
