Having read through the catalogue of problems again, what i suggest is a re-install, what concerns me particularly is:

3. at startup i actually get a scratchy image of the WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN screen if i restart from xp and switch to kubuntu.

Something was seriously wrong from the very start, i also use XP (dual-boot, KDE as default), and in over a year - and many, many re-boots from one OS into the other - i have never seen this.

Failing that, at least try what toad suggested.

I also get that kind of thing... on shutdown in kubuntu, the last window that was open is "scratched" across the screen.

kjjjjshab i don't have experience with that video engines but in that moment i browse via voodoo 3 banshee that runs generic driver and there is NO problems the OS is xubuntu

That is pretty much how people live with their 6xxx/7xxx nvidia and KDE4...

Well alot of time has gone by since 8.10. Looks like several improvements have been made for 9.10. I think this one's a winner now.
