    Need help!

    Hello everybody,

I need to have wireless working on my Kubuntu (note: I have kubuntu kde4 installed over windows xp). I followed the steps listed in this page http://thelinuxnewbie.blogspot.com/2...60137430544470

But, for step 5: it says "Now that you've installed it, go to K>System>Windows Wireless Drivers and right-click. Select “Edit Item.”

I am not able to find where is "Edit Item"

Note: I have installed all the required drivers successfully.

Note that the item is dated Wednesday, August 09, 2006. It talks about Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper and is KDE3.

What kind of Wireless Card do you have?

        Re: Need help!

I have waited a while before replying because ubuntuforums has been down.

Although the wireless card is labeled "Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI card" I have a suspicion that the underlying chipset is a Broadcom. If you open Konsole Terminal Program and input:
        lspci
        you should see something like:
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)
        - this is the wireless card on my laptop.

In the past there was a method of installing this card but suddenly with "Hardy" there was a little more to add. I use http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ireless+feisty which particularly mentions the 4306 but is updated to cover the problem. I have also found that "Problem 2" is appropriate to me.

The same sort of solution is given on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766560 for a Broadcom Wireless BCM4312 (rev 02).

To use this Broadcom solution can look a little daunting but the answer is (a) be methodical (b) copy and paste and don't type in!!!

          Hello,

          lspci command outputs:
          02:03.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4309 802.11a/b/g (rev 03)

Note: In the Wireless Network Drivers - windows driver I have: bcmwl5: Hardware is present.

          What to do next?

            Re: Need help!

            I would try http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ireless+feisty

As I said it can appear daunting, but don't be put off. Start at #1 and go on through to #26. You might need the "Problems".You should not need to type in anything if you highlight the line from the Howto, RIGHT click, choose copy, then move the cursor into the Terminal, RIGHT click and choose paste.

One thing to watch is that the Howto might say "kernel 123" but what downloads is "kernel 125." In that case you need to change the text to suit the update.

My Wireless Hardware Manager also says "bcmwl5: Hardware is present." ...But it is the software that makes the difference.

                Re: Need help!

Unfortunately such is the Broadcom. I have done it several times now and I have got it down to about 15 minutes.

For those with more money than sense you can buy a Wireless Card which will work out-of-the-box with Linux e.g. http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/products/wireless/

                  Re: Need help!

not sure if you got this working... but I was reading an article and the writer was talking about his Broadcom chip and had a link on getting it to work. So, since I ran across this I figured I would post the link for you to take a look at. Hopefully this will help.

                    Re: Need help!

The link quoted http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/...reinstallation is about fwcutter

The Ubuntu link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ireless+feisty says don't use fwcutter:
I wouldn't use the firmware cutter because it only allows you to run at 11 Mbps with it. With ndiswrapper you will get 54 Mbps if your router will allow it.
