Installing new hardware

My Kubuntu install is running pretty nicely atm but I would like to upgrade the video card from whats in it now to an nvidia card. When i switch them out and boot up will linux detect the new card and load the appropriate default driver to get it running (plug and play) until i can get the nvidia drivers installed?

Nope, Linux won't automatically install a proprietary Nvidia driver.

However, if you configure a VESA driver with your existing card before you do the swap, then change to the Nvidia card, the VESA driver will run X when you reboot, so at least you'll have a GUI in which to work. Then you can use EnvyNG (assuming you're running Hardy) to install the appropriate Nvidia driver.

well, it supoost to do just that. But in case it can't, you have to change your video driver to vesa in the xorg.conf.

Oh im sorry maybe you misunderstood. I dont mean will linux automatically install the proprietary drivers I mean will it install the basic default driver to get it running? at which point I will then install the proprietary drivers.

Hello,

With my previous Linux I changed my videocard.
I had an onboard (Asus M2A-VM Mainboard) Ati x1250 graphic card.
Replaced it with Nvidia Gf8500.

1- I booted my linux.
2- I uninstalled my Ati drivers.
3-I shut down my computer.
4- Replaced the card Installed my new Nvidia Gf8500 card.
5-Turned computer on screen was ok with vesa drivers.
6- Installed Nvidia drivers
7- Reboted again.

I had 3d support.

If xwindows does not start and you stay at console.
You can install nvidia drivers using command

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new

what about other hardware like a new dvd drive or something once I put it in and boot will linux detect it and load it properly?
