kubuntu on old ibm x30 - to slow???

    hey all

hope this is the right place to ask...

first off - i cant really find any minimuim specs requirements for 7.10, anyone got any clues of what it really needs?

anyway, i got an old IBM X30 for communiting and stuff and figured with a nice lightweight OS it would be ok. specs from memory are pentium M 1.2 GHz, 40 Gb HDD and 512Mb RAM. i installed kubuntu 7.10 but its running really pretty badly, when i got the machine it only had 256mb ram and was using basically all of this ticking over, figured that was fair enough so upgraded to 512 - trouble is its still ticking over using nearly 500! processor ussage is pretty high doing not a lot - figure its stressing itself out paging a lot. not got any fancy stuff installed either.

from a wee bit of linux experience years back i remember i needing very little in the way of resources, am i expecting too much from an old machine or is something likely to be wrong? any ideas?

    many thanks in advance
    angus

    If you check with
    Code:
    top
you can see which process is using the most resources. If it is kwin, that's KDE, then you might want to look at Xubuntu, rather than Kubuntu.

      cheers for the reply...

      top 5 are

      ksysguard
      Xorg
      ksysguardd
      top
      kwin

ksysguard seems to be the bad one... any advice?

edit - feel stupid now... ksysguard seems to be a performance thing i had running - not very important...

      now looking
      xorg
      dbus
      init
      konsole
      top

kicked off amorok and everything seems a lot happier

        Good.

There is no normal need to run the ksysguard daemon, as you found. I said that kwin was KDE, but really it is the combination of kwin and xorg that provides the display and desktop environment. Sounds like it is working better now. A lightweight performance monitor, if you want one, is gkrellm.

cheers, will look out for that...

was really just expecting the thing to be turbo charged with the extra RAM. been uninstalling the junk i dont need, the machine is working heaps better now.

nice wee forum - will be back....
