before you begin flaming, i have not only tried google, but i have tried picking the brains of what fluent linux users i know in person, including the one who got me started with kubuntu.
So, my machine gets confused when I insert a blank cd. I rather suspect it is trying to automount it. Normally it thinks for a minute, then spits up an error message of "cannot mount because drive is blank," and then I am good to go with burning to the cd. But sometimes it just whirrs and grinds and thinks for nigh on 30 minutes, or an hour. Everything slows down and sometimes even jams up and crashes, because it just cannot conceptualize "blank cd." No, it says.... no... must... automount... must...
Now that I'm done personifying a cheap secondhand box, I'll tell you how I attempted to edit fstab. The word "noauto" was ALREADY THERE when I opened it. But it does automount. Usually to a useful end, and to a distictly tenacious, persistantly idiotic one when I put in a blank cd.

is what it says. Yet it still tries (and fails) to automount.
Spuh.
Any ideas what's going on?
