Resolution. HELP!!

Hi!

I have a BIG problem i´v just installed Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 Remix on my Fujitsu Siemens Laptop with a widescreen monitor and the resolution is all wrong so i can´t see the "start button" or anything else of the menu, in fact all i can see is the upper left corner of the screen.......... What to do

How can i change the resolution without seeing the menu?

I've never been in that situation, but I'll take a guess.

Right click on the desktop background.

Pull down the menu until it says Run Command...

When the box appears, type in

systemsettings

Under Computer Administration, you want the one that says "Monitor and Display."

Thanx for the quick respons!!
In the "Display" settings i have three rolldown menus one named "settings for screen" in this one the text "screen 1" is displayed, this one i can´t change.
The next one is named "screen size" in this one there is no value and i can´t change it.
The last one is named "refresh rate" this one is allso blank and i can´t change it!!!

If you can do Ctrl-Alt-F1, and get a tty terminal, that's what you need to do. At the prompt, login with your user name and password.

I don't know anything about your laptop, but try this for starters (it's kinda the generic screen):

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and look for an opportunity to choose a "VESA" display type in the script that will run. Follow the prompts and run the script and see if it gets better.

If that doesn't work, probably you're going to have to use nano and open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and manually change a line or two in the "screen" stanza.

So, from the command line prompt, that would be

sudo nano /etc//X11/xorg.conf

and scroll down to the "Screen" stanza, and look for a line that appears to set the screen resolution.

Do you get the oport. to choose the Display driver on KDE4? I've had issues myself with Screen display problems and tried reconfiguring X. For some reason though, it never asks those questions anymore, under KDE4, about Driver, Screen Refresh and Resol. I've even tried manually editing xorg.conf with what I know is installed and acceptable, but they don't effect anything at all.

-when i try this the only thing i can configure is my keyboard, after configurating the keyboard the "guide" exits.

-In this second alternativ i do find som entrys about "screen" but non about resolution.
The laptop is an Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PRO V3515

I know nothing about intel chips (intel 950) and you resolution size (1280x800).

Hi, the sam applies for me, I have an antique Acer Travelmate 212TX.
256MB of RAM, from which 8Mb is separated for the Trident Cyberblade VGA.
My screen resolution is not going further than 800x600, although my TFT is 1024x768 capabe.
There is not any possibility to change from display settings, since there is no entry for higher reolutions, than 800x600. Furthermore, changing xorg.conf had no effect, Xorg.o.log says, that the VGA chip is detected, but 1024x768 is not used, because: "vrefresh is out of range" and "hsync is out of range"
So, it seems, the system recognises that the panel is 1024x768 capable, but can not use it.
Please help me!

Meh -- I just tried it, and you are correct, it is changed since the version that starts with selection of display type. The first option is frame buffers, and then it goes to keyboards. So, never mind that plan .....

Hmmmmmmm.

Depending on what model of Fujitsu Siemens that is, here's a report that the old i810 driver works:

I actually had fun with my laptop and setting Kubuntu. Now I'm playing around with a new Desktop 64bit. So far so good.

Now if I can figure this X problem out. I'd just like to know where Display is getting the properties for resolution and how to limit that. All those other Resolutions it reports are rubbish to me and is causing annoyances on reboots.

The relevant part of Xorg.conf should look like this:

The lines with "640x480@60" are the relevant part. (the numbers might be different in your Xorg.conf file, but the layout - 000x000@00 - will be the same)

Change this to "1280x1024@85" in both places. Also change

Virtual 640 480

to

Virtual 1280 1024

Save the changes and restart. Then go to System Settings -> Monitor & Display, and you should be able to change the settings. You will need to click the "administrator mode" button at the bottom before changing settings. If you maximize the window, you should be able to see the administrator button.

Problem solved!!!!!

I made a fresh installation with Ububtu 8.04 insted of Kubuntu, worked at once!!!!!!
