[solved] CPU #1 not responding - cannot use it.

    [solved] CPU #1 not responding - cannot use it.

    My install of Kubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-116-generic is not able to use the second core of my Athlon 64x2 5000+ processor. The pc is a Dell 531s with 2gb of ram. I have been trying to find a fix for this but no joy. It seems that this is happening in other distributions too.

    Does anyone have any suggestions regarding this?

    By trying both the Hardy i386, and the AMD 64 versions, I have come to the conclusion that i386 will not use both cores on my 5000+. This is a little confusing as both kernels are identified as "Generic", I was trying the i386 version as it is 32 bit, and I have had compatibility issues with the 64 bit versions in the past. In Gutsy I had to load a "Generic" kernel to get dual cores to function. Anyhoo, I figured it out, just thought I would answer my own question.

      I have never heard or seen that an AMD CPU can run the i386 architecture -- I think they HAVE to have the "AMD64" architecture to work correctly. Intel 64-bit CPUs, on the other hand, can run either architecture.
