Kubuntu not starting up correctly after Kubuntu-desktop install

I have installed kubuntu-desktop over ubuntu. I restarted and from then on I caannot get pass the sign on screen. I type in my password it takes it and then returns to the sign on screen. The desktop do not want to show.

Any Ideas how to fix? I do not want to redo the PC as there is a lot of emails and stuff I do not want to loose.

Sounds like the K Display Manager, aka KDM isn't running correctly, which means no X server.

Can you boot "Recovery Mode", and get to a command line prompt that looks like "#_"? If so, enter

/etc/init.d/kdm start

and then make note of the error messages that are listed. Tell us what you see, and that should lead to a way to make it run.

If it happens to put up your GUI login, but that won't let you in to your desktop, then list your CPU and graphics card, and maybe we'll decide to reinstall your video driver.

I have the EXACT same problem! (see this thread)
On my case it happends after a Kubuntu actualization.

If I do: /etc/init.d/kdm start
I get: kde alredy running

I get: kde alredy running

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop

should stop KDM -- try it and see if there are any errors. If it seems to stop correctly, then I would do

sudo shutdown now -r

and see if you can boot normally and log in normally when the system restarts.

Could be some hardware incompativility after last Kubuntu actualization?
heinrichb, what's your hardware? I've a Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 with integrated nvidia geforce 6100

The kde shutdown screen appears and after some seconds it returns to black with the cursor on the top letf corner and it does nothing. No errors apears

So, with that black screen, can you do Alt-F1 and get the CLI prompt?

Yes.
And I do

sudo shutdown now -r

Restart and same problem..

I have had this problem when I had permissions issues with my home folder...don't know if it would apply here, but it might be worth a check...

Ahhhhhhhh -- yes, if you've mucked about "as root" in your user /home folder, that is a bad thing, and might cause such a problem. I hadn't thought of that one.

I've checked my home folder and permissions seems to be ok (view and modify allowed for the owner). What more should I check?

Take a look at /home/xabih/Desktop and the files that are in it, and make sure none are "root only", especially the Desktop directory itself.

Checked.
All directories and files at home are owned by the user and with view and modify allowed.
Still the same problem.

In Konqueror just put your mouse cursor over the folder/files in your home directory. If the owner shows as root - root instead of your_user_name - your_user_name you'll know.
