Cannot get majority of audio video types to play

Could someone please post a checklist of what I should be doing to trouble shoot this problem.
MP3 and wma files will play in xmms but no other player and no video types will work.
Just intalled kubuntu 5.10
Any help appreciated.

it is not just the codecs, it also depends on what engine is used by the player. so say xmms is using alsa but others are using oss, this would mean alsa has the right codecs but oss does not. I'll try to post a nice tutorial with pics as soon as I get a chance. Hopefully in the next day or two.
