Error 29 trying to duel boot to windows...

GRR..since installing Kubuntu I can't access my xp installation anymore. Everytime I try to log in it give me "error 29: unable to write to disk" crap and I can only go back and boot into linux.

A first for me, too. GRUB can't write to the disk for some reason. I can't imagine it is when it executes “makeactive” on that drive (and, actually, makeactive is really not necessary).

savedefault – maybe the file default didn't get created or placed correctly upon install, I don't know.
GRUB might be trying to write to “default” upon executing “savedefault.”

Let's try killing savedefault (I never use it, myself):

Open Konqueror.
Type /boot in the Location window at the top.
Click grub.
Right-click menu.lst. Actions > Edit as Root.
menu.lst will open in Kate or Kwrite text editor.
Scroll down to the bottom Windows boot entry. Locate the savedeafult line.
In front of savedefault, type a # like this:
# savedefault

Then do: File > Save and File > Quit
close out everything
re-boot to test it.


(btw, the # sign means "comment" line; that line is ignored by GRUB. You can also delete the savedeafult line, but by commenting it out, we still can see what was there before we messed with it. You probably already know some/most of all this stuff, but mentioning it just in case.)
