Keeping media players as they are...

I currently run Kubuntu 7.10. I have full multimedia running - very nicely thank you ;-) This of course includes all the naughty codecs like the Win32 ones and also libdvdcss so that I can watch the DVD's I have legally bought. Yes, they are legal.

Ok, what I want to know is can I mark certain packages as never to be upgraded unless I specifically ask for it? Stuff like Kaffiene? I had an auto upgrade a couple of nights ago and it broke multimedia support. I ended up reinstalling the various codecs etc. In SuSE, using YaST I could mark packages as not for upgrade but not it seems in Adept. Unless I'm missing something. I did try clicking the help button but I simply got the rather annoying message that there was no help index for Adept... with no way of actually creating one either :-((( that wasn't helpful at all.

    So, any ideas? Please :-)

The Synaptic Package Manager will reload the package information. You should now see, that the menu item Package → Lock Version is checked. Furthermore all actions in the menu Package are disabled now.
