Help me with partitioning.

Well, i just got a 64bit kubuntu 7.04 CD. I used it as live CD but it wont lemme use the internet, so i tried installing it. In step 4, it asks for partitioning. I have a 160 GB hard drive which was formatted in 4 parts ....30, 40, 40 and 39 GBs respectively. I have windows XP installed on the 30 GB partition. That file system is NTFS. 2 partitions are formatted with NTFS, while remaining 40 and 39 are not formatted yet since i dont need them.

Now when i try to install kubuntu, it shows me many different partition options, i just dont understand them. It asks 2GB on one disk and 256 MB on another disk.....i am not able to understand...

Please guide me. It would be more helpful if u give me link to some graphical installation steps.

The partitioning application on that Kubuntu CD is an application name gparted (Gnome Partition Editor). But, a more current and complete method to deal strictly with disk partitioning is to download and burn a Gparted Live CD. Get the latest version here:

It's all graphical. During bootup of your Gparted Live CD, choose a screen resolution that you know will work with your display, like 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768, then you can see your partitions and work with them. When you've got it the way you want it, exit from that CD and boot your Kubuntu CD and you'll be ready to install without further partitioning.

OK, let's just use the gparted on your Live CD. Boot the live CD, do Alt-F2, and type

sudo gparted

(I'm hoping gparted is on that Live CD -- I don't actually know for certain ...)

Can you see your hard disk drive with it?

Well i did that. Pressed Alt+F2, and typed that... but nothing happened. I was just left with the plain desktop.
But i again tried to install kubuntu, and this time i think i was able to do it. I selected ext2 format and assigned unformatted 40GB where it asked 2GB and the next unformatted 39 GB for that 256 MB requirement, and it worked.
But after some trials when i was still not able to use the internet, i switched back to windows and OMG, those 2 sections of hard drive which i had assigned for the kubuntu installation was gone. It was a shocker.

So sadly, i hunted down my windows XP cd and booted from it and deleted those 2 partitions and created them as new again.

I think this kubuntu requires to be loaded by a professional. I really dont want to lose my precious documents.
And btw, i even tried to listen to songs after it was installed, it told me "no MP3 support", even couldnt watch a single avi video. I guess all this requires too much of upgradation from the internet which will put in lot of data transfer.

I dont know, i am just kind of irritated by this. I guess i will go ask in my college if anyone is using kubuntu all the time. Maybe he would have all the softwares.

GParted was not on a recent 7.04 Live CD I used.
But you can load up the Live CD, go to Adept (K > System > Adept Manager),
type gparted in the search window, then request Install, and get it that way, and then use GParted from K > System > Gnome Partition Editor on the Live CD session.

Of course, when you are done using GParted and then done installing Kubuntu and you eject your CD, GParted will be gone too as it was installed only as part of your Live session (in RAM). When you boot up your installed Kubuntu, you can get GParted again, and this time it will be on your hard drive along with Kubuntu.
