what type does y partision need to be?

Hi,
I assume that you are installing Kubuntu. In that case you need at least 2 partitions. The first partition needs to be a linux SWAP partition and should be about twice the size of your RAM. So if your RAM is 1GB make your SWAP partition 2GB.
The second partition should be ext3. (If ext3 is not an option make it ext2).
