no kernel works except the ubuntu kernel!

Hi guys . I am remastering ubuntu and have compiled my own kernel for it . After some palying around , i amanged to get it to work but it doesnt seem to recognize all my usb devices , such as usb sticks or mice. This has happened in every other OS except kubuntu/ubuntu. What does ubuntu have that makes the detections for this? Some special patches to the kernel? If so , i would like to know what patches please! Also , ubuntu is the only Os that detected that i should have acpi=off instead of on.

You don't seem to be sure about what you are doing with the kernel recompilation, so you will better off leaving it alone. Just pass the acpi=off parameter to the boot (save it in grub) and all should be fine. You don't need to recompile everything just to have acpi off. And disabling it in BIOS may be an even better idea.
    My 2 cents.

i think you understood wrong. the ubuntu kernel works great. it detects everything . But when i compile kernels or use other distro, i first have to d oacpi=off and then my usb slots doesnt work. What does the ubuntu kernel have that detects this?

Did you build support ( modules ) for the devices in question? Are you using xconfig or menuconfig?
