Microphone + Graphics on Thinkpad T60 (Feisty Fawn)

    Hi folks,
I have had Kubuntu 7.04 running on my new Thinkpad T60 for a week now, and by and large, everything runs surprisingly well. I am completely new to Linux and I also have a Windows XP Pro partition on the computer, but haven't even used it for anything yet.

Now, as I said, most things run smoothly, and I was able to fix some issues myself (though I have no idea what I am doing ). However, the internal microphone does not work in Skype, and I really need it.

Occasionally the sound does not work at all in Kubuntu, and what's even weirder, restarting the computer and booting windows, the sound does not come on in Windows either. I initially suspected a hardware defect, but then I found out that, in Kubuntu, the the PCM output in KMix is sometimes switched off, and switching it on, alleviates the problem (does not explain why it happens in Windows, but that is a secondary worry).

The microphone does not work for skype, and thus far I have not found any testing software (I would be grateful for a recommendation). In KMix, the microphone output is turned off, and when I try pushing the green button, I get a loud high pitched whine that only stops when I turn it off again. Any ideas how I can get the microphone to work?

I also have a question about my GPU. I have an ATI X1300. The graphics all work fine, but I would like to know whether I have to install additional drivers to get full 3D support etc. The X1300 is not quite old, so I thought maybe it is fully supported by Feisty Fawn already. Input appreciated.

I have Feisty running nicely on my T41...

The whine you hear when enabling the microphone is acoustic feedback, caused by the proximity of the microphone to the speakers. The green button in KMix sends the mic input to the speakers (leave it OFF); the red one sends it to the input of whatever's listening (you want this ON). You'll also need to have "Capture" turned up (so I find).

Also, sometimes KMix gets confused and you might need to use alsamixer (in the repos if not already installed) to set things correctly.

As for the sound issue... there was a bug in Ubuntu on ThinkPads and other laptops that sound would not work properly after a hibernate/resume. Only a cold boot (turning it off and on again, not just restarting) restored the sound. If that's what is causing your problems, there's a fix at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s....20/+bug/80893.

As a fellow ThinkPad user I can recommend to you the ThinkWiki site (www.thinkwiki.org), you should be able to find plenty of information there about Linux on your laptop
