I don't know what the problem is but I think before anyone could help they will need to know what cpu(s) you have and which kernel you are using.

The easy way to get that information is to run a couple of konsole console commands:

Code:

cd
cat proc/cpuinfo | grep -C 5 name>delete.me
uname -a >>delete.me
less delete.me

Then post the results here.

If you don't understand what I just wrote, look at the "manpages" for cd, cat, grep, less and uname. with the command "man <whatever>", where <whatever> is the name of the command you're looking for.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. As I said in my original post, the feeze happens at random times but i've noticed that without installing the nvidia driver its less frequent. It only froze around four times yesterday compared to about eight to ten times an hour with the nvidia driver installed.

I'm not saying the problem is purely with the video driver but my thinking is that there is something in the xorg config file that probably needs to be tweaked to stop it. Problem is I'm not sure where to start.

The specs of my machine are as follows...
1Gb Of Ram
Amd Athlon 4200 2.2ghz Dual core processor
Asus M2V-MX Motherboard with integrated Lan and High-Def Audio
Nvidia 7300 GS PCI-Express GFX Card

That indicates that UnicornRider's theory that you've fallen victim to a bug in the Intel Core Duo firmware is out. You also seem to be using the correct Linux kernel for your processor. The good news is that you don't have to replace your CPU or your linux kernel. The bad news, of course, is that now we have to find the real problem.

Frankly, I doubt that the nvidia driver is the culprit, but I've been known to be wrong before. Are you sure that you have the correct nvidia driver package installed? I would think that your device would need the "nvidia-glx-new" package rather than the "nvidia-glx" package. You can use Adept or (my preference)Synaptic to see which one you should use and which one you have installed. If you have the wrong one, remove the old one BEFORE you install the new one.

As a matter of fact I did try uninstalling the old nvidia driver and then installing the new one which didn't work after rebooting. Only way i could get my login to work again was by changing the name of the driver in the xorg.conf file to nv.

I tried the same thing with the driver directly from nvidias site. Needless to say after a few hours of googling I eventually gave up and just left the driver set to nv for the time being.

As for the freezing up. Strangely enough it hasn't happened at all today, although its still early.

Okay just a quick update. Did a fresh install of kubuntu today..installed the nvidia-glx-new driver which now actually works without me even looking at the xorg.conf file.

Problem is the random freezes have came back with a vengence. I cant even listen to a five minute song without a freeze occuring at least three times during playback.

Googling doesn't provide anything I haven't already tried, although one thing has occurred to me. Is it possible the freezing could be caused by 32bit code executing on a 64bit OS ?

Its getting to the point now where i'm going to have to seriously consider uninstalling kubuntu from my comp because i simply cant get anything done with these freezes occurring.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice i'm all ears

I have managed to solve the random freezing problem. I removed the x86_64 version of kubuntu and installed the 32bit version instead. Works like a charm. No random freezes or any other irritating problems.

That Asus M2V-MX motherboard has appeared in multiple posts complaining of freezups or hesitations in the OS. There must be something about it that doesn't like the (K)Ubuntu kernel, or perhaps the 64-bit kernel.

Actually dibl you have a good point there. When i first got the board I had to upgrade the bios software on it before i could even run the kubuntu live cd. The more i think about it, its very possible the board is the main cause of the problem, but it will be a while before i can afford to get a new one so will just have to perserver with it untill then.

Keep an eye on your Asus support site -- maybe they'll patch that BIOS and your freeze problem will disappear one of these days.
