    the idea, to retrieve data by reinstalling, kubuntu

    The is for next time things wrong I am thinking that since system-restore is not possible, can I just reinstall kubuntu drapper to the free drive space, and then get the data back from there.

    You can if you have made a separate /home partition. If you haven't, try this link.

        Remember that kubuntu works as a live cd. You can always recover the data first, perhaps to the partition you talked about, and if that worked, then reinstall. Maybe this will be safer.
