    Kubuntu

First like to say hello to you all!
I have a pc shop in belgium (www.powerbits.be) and I do not force microsoft products onto people.
Instead a standard install them with kubuntu, the client gets the choice wat he would like..
Needles to say mostly linux is chosen, for its being Free and some customers stick with it!
Some are realy shocked that an alternative to windows xp even exists!
I am very happy with the latest 7.04 , becuase of its hardware support, 6.10 did have some issues on some motherboards (sound) and they work great now!
So I am proud to inform people about the great Linux alternative

Personaly I use 95% linux (5% gaming on xp), my work goes faster and have less to worry about spyware etc...
I am fairley new , but I have learned and discovered many great things..

I do have a problem upgrading my 6.06 (dapper), lukiley i made a backup to restore my system.
Is a new installation better and how could I take programs with me on that..
Or am I doing something wrong?

    Many thanks

    Frank

    Re: Kubuntu

Well, first of all congratulation .

Second, do you ship outside Belgium?. And outside EU?

No, is not that I'm going to buy, I'm quite comfortable with local suppliers, but it would be a great url to give to people asking for linux preloaded computers.

      Re: Kubuntu

You don't say what problem you had upgrading 6.06 (dapper).

The normal advice is that you can upgrade one issue at a time e.g. you can upgrade dapper to edgy and edgy to feisty - but not dapper to feisty.

I had problems upgrading from dapper to edgy and ended up doing a clean install. I had posted by problem on a forum and did get an answer, but I was too impatient! I have had no problems this time moving from edgy to feisty

        Hi,

        Tx guys for your reply

I have two pcs I use here. bith with Dapper, 6.06 , so I did do the upgrade to kubuntu 6.10 using first the internet method , this failed
when the pc restarted I saw him hanging oon some message conserning CPU (unfortenatly i do not have this message)

Then I read that using a alternative CD would be the better method.
So i did it and had the same results

This pc did have automatix installed, ...

        Wat do I do?

        Tx

          Re: Kubuntu

          a) Give us the exact error message
          b) Try if a live-cd, and see if it works
          c) Answer the question about shipping.

            Re: Kubuntu

I do not understand wat you mean with the live cd? the pc will woirk fine with a live cd...
The problem is to take my already installed programs with me..

The question about shipping, is also not realy to the point here..

Let me explain again, I upgraded from dapper to edgy and it failed (using apt get with internet or with alternative cd)..

If I would create a new installation , could I copy my programs to it?

Or is the upgrade the only solution??

              Re: Kubuntu

Upgrading from drapper to edgy can be a pain, especially with automatix installed. Automatix is not officially supported. And going from drapper directly to feisty is not possible.
I would suggest doing a clean install of edgy from live or alt. cd., install the software you want, except automatix! You will see why later. Then when the time comes, or you feel like it upgrade to feisty using this method:
              https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FeistyUpgrades
It works just fine for me and others.

If you are feeling really sexy you can then remaster that setup for installing on your customers computers with one of these tools:
              http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/i...tpage&Itemid=1
You should be able to do a kubuntu version with this.
              This should work as well:
              http://ibuild.livecd.net/

I hope this helps and congrats on offering kubuntu to your customers

                  Glad to be of help.

The remastering tools alow you to make a live/install cd/dvd of your kubuntu and all the apps you you use. So you can make a cd or dvd with your preferences and use that to install on other machines. You can also give it to your customers as a abckup cd/dvd.

But I give the customers the choice and I am proud to spread the linux word

                        Re: Kubuntu

Those who have tried Feisty Fawn (I have tried Feisty Alpha Herd 5 Live CD) say that Feisty is great, many had reverted back to Dapper Drake from Edgy though I am using Edgy on my laptop (Gnome). The only problem I have is that Edgy does not detect my built-in card reader (ENE), reports on net say that Kernel 2.6.20.11 and above support this card reader.

You can mount your drives from desktop with the Feisty Live CD.

                          Re: Kubuntu

Well, as I said, I did have some motherboards like the Asrock ALiveNF6G-VSTA wich did not have Its Ethernet port and sound activated... (with edgy)
However Feisty's Beta version recognised immediately the hardware and even the onboard 6100 grahics card..
                          This is just fantastic !

                          Great job kubuntu !
